Happy birthday Urban Sketchers !
To celebrate the joy of sketching globally, we - Urban Sketchers Surabaya - was honored to be on the list of 26 cities around the world to lead a regional sketching workshop of Urban Sketchers 10 Years 10 Classes initiated by Urban Sketchers.
I was so humbled to be one of the four instructor for this regional event. The other three instructor, who are also my mentors and friends, and were LK Bing, Darman Angir, and Badrie. We started the workshop by a simple meet and greet in Artland Surabaya. This is an art supply shop equipped with a huge space for a workshop. There we let the students see our sketches through a throw down, a term we, urban sketchers, use to drop open our sketches for public viewing and discussion. The participants seemed enjoying the throw down as it was rich in variety of sketching styles, from water color, pencil, pen, charcoal and oil sketches - and variety sizes of media, from small sketchbooks, journals, postcards, up to bigger sketchbooks and canvas sized sketches.
My main class was on ' Objects: Townscape Elements, Urban Furniture, Traffic & Vehicles ' , where participants learn to sketch from small objects growing into the whole townscape atmosphere. Small things matters as well as the big things, being the youngest of all instructor, I understood how nervous the students were. But as we continued sketching from the simple things first, gradually everyone could go better and feeling confident with their bigger result.
My second class was done in a co-teaching with Darman Angir on ' Composition 1: Basic Perspective & Sketching Principles ', here we aim to let the students learn about the basics, the foundation. We started from the basics and variety of perspectives, principles of sketching, and of course, how to not be afraid to sketch.
As always, Urban Sketching always brings us new friends and experiences in every meetings. At the end of the day, I could not be more grateful for the opportunity to teach and learn together.
Long live Urban Sketchers ! Happy Sketchy Birthday !
